The EUROPattern Classifier, a software compatible to EUROLabOffice 4.0, represents a milestone in IFA automation.
In the era of artificial intelligence, the development of this software has enabled EUROIMMUN to maintain its position at the forefront of innovative research and to serve its customers’ needs and advance the field of diagnostics.
The EUROPattern Classifier, which uses deep convolutional neural networks (a part of artificial intelligence) trained during the development of the software, generates results proposals for indirect immunofluorescence assays (IFA), including IFA pattern classification for a growing number of substrates and titer calculations. The results must always be confirmed by the user.
IIFT pattern recognition using the EUROPattern Classifier – what are deep convolutional neural networks (DCNN)?
Whether it’s quickly unlocking the phone via face recognition or using a translation app with voice control: Simple forms of artificial neural networks, which are based on biological models, can be found in many areas of our everyday life, especially in image and audio data processing and machine learning. Based on models, the machine “learns” to identify and classify specific features and patterns in the training data and then applies this learning to new information that is generated. Unlabelled test datasets are used for a final verification of the learning result. The artificial networks are organised into layers, with each layer further refining the result. The information is first received by the input layer, then goes through a defined number of additional layers (hidden layers) before reaching the output layer, which is when the final result is produced. The interaction of specific assessments of the incoming information by the individual layers allows the evaluation of complex data. A convolutional neural network (CNN) with a large number of hidden layers is known as a deep convolutional neural network (DCNN), which forms the foundation of deep learning and EUROIMMUN’s automated IIFT pattern recognition.
As such, the classifier software is already established for many cell-based applications in autoimmune and infection diagnostics. And with the latest release, it now also faciliates the interpretation of immunofluorescence on complex tissue substrates, enabling automated classification of autoantibodies in organ-specific autoimmune diseases.
The Classifier offers automated result proposals from images captured with the all-in-one IFA instrument UNIQO 160 as well as from the automated microscopes EUROPattern and EUROPattern Microscope Live.
The availability of the EUROPattern Classifier applications depends on the device. Further information can be found on the individual websites of the respective EUROIMMUN devices. In addition, the Classifier may only be used with test systems that can be evaluated with this software in accordance to their instructions for use. The EUROPattern is a software product compatible to EUROLabOffice 4.0.
